Breaking Into a New Niche: How to Make It Happen

Feeling stuck in the same type of sessions but wanting to shift into something new? Whether you’re trying to move from families to weddings, couples to branding, or any other switch, here’s how to do it without feeling like you’re starting over completely…

Portfolio build like a pro

If you don’t have work in your new niche, create it. Model calls, styled shoots, or even trading sessions (see this post!) can help you build the portfolio you want to be booked for.

Market for where you’re headed

Stop posting examples of what you don’t want to shoot anymore. If you’re moving into elopements but your IG feed is all families, potential couples won’t even realize you exist! Start shifting your content towards photos that exemplify the type of work you want to book more of- even if it’s gradual.

make friends in the industry

Savannah’s creative community is tight. If you want to break into weddings, connect with planners. If you want to shoot branding, get to know local business owners. Your network is your best marketing tool.

be loud about it

Announce it. Talk about it. Make a big deal about the fact that you’re now offering XYZ. People need repetition to remember, so don’t be shy! Your work deserves to be celebrated, and people can’t celebrate what they don’t know!

Breaking into a new niche isn’t an overnight thing, but if you stay consistent and keep pushing, the right clients will start finding you.

Happy shooting!
